Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay Technology in 2025.

The Championships court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Replay systems will be launched at Wimbledon this year.

Competitors will gain the right to question certain rulings made by the official, echoing the system already in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step arrives only a year after the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to review other decisions, including:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a competitor can ask for.

A Recent Example

An illustrative incident took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire watched a video and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where the crowd have occasionally been unsure if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely 100 days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
