Micky van de Ven found the net twice as Tottenham extended their unbeaten run in away games in the top division and handed the Toffees their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were unbeaten in their last five matches at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the end of last season.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven struck twice from corners in the opening 45 minutes to place their strong form at risk, and they were failed to turn it around before the midfielder - set up by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - headed home a final goal to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien believed he had equalized the tally five minutes after Van de Ven's opener, directing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

Beto, meanwhile, failed to convert a handful of opportunities, while Vicario made a succession of excellent stops to guarantee Tottenham went five matches on the road unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, advising Craig Pawson to review the score on the pitchside monitor and the official decided that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

This victory elevates Thomas Frank's side up to third in the division, five points off local foes and leaders the Gunners.

Everton remain 14th and are six points clear of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven excels in duties at each end of pitch

Following a drab weekday performance in the European competition against the French side, where they mustered a mere two shots on target, Frank chose Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The summer signing was failed to influence the game before being substituted for the substitute after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the end.

Centre-back Van de Ven transformed into an offensive threat to be feared.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees missing striker's instinct

The club's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it appears the novelty may have faded slightly and fans flocked to the gates after Sarr's final goal for Spurs.

The break in the team's unbeaten home run won't be a massive concern for David Moyes, but their striker situation will be.

The forward and the other striker - the Toffees' two recognised centre-forwards - had scored just one league goal combined before the weekend's outing.

And they were failed to contribute to that miserable tally on a damp and dreary evening on in Liverpool.

The striker's form was epitomized when he chose to overhead kick a clear chance from close range, even with having space and opportunity to readjust for a simpler shot that would have tested Vicario.

Barry, too, was unable to influence the game after coming on for the starter in the 65th minute.

It was not for a shortage of opportunity. Most of Everton's attacks came through the winger and the forward, who tirelessly delivered dangerous crosses into the Spurs box.

The Toffees: Moyes' men head to the Stadium of Light in the top flight on early November at 20:00 GMT.

Spurs: The London club go to Newcastle's ground on late October for their next round League Cup tie against Newcastle.
