Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French aircraft in a joint strike against an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the IS group, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, located using surveillance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was situated in mountainous terrain just north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets used Paveway IV guided bombs to target a several access tunnels down to the facility... early reports are that the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the attack on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - also known as the so-called Islamic State - established jihadist rule over significant areas in Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This action underscores British leadership, and determination to work closely with our partners, to eliminate any re-emergence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

UK warplanes have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of IS after its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank every member of British forces involved in this mission for their expertise and their courage," he added. "Including them were numerous British troops deployed over the festive period. This operation, to remove terrorist threats who endanger our safety, demonstrates how UK forces are ready to step up, all year round, ensuring Britain's security at home and influential overseas."

Last December, the United States armed forces conducted what it called a "massive strike" against Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an assault resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. says Daesh still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
